Interim Guidance for the Detection of Novel Influenza A Virus Using Rapid Influenza Diagnostic TestsThis interim guidance provides an overview of the sensitivities of rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDT) in detecting novel influenza A (H1N1) virus in order to help guide the reporting and interpretation of test results.  This document does not discuss either direct (DFA) or indirect immunofluorescence assays (IFA).  This guidance is primarily intended for clinical laboratories and clinical practices conducting influenza testing on respiratory specimens from patients with suspected novel influenza A (H1N1) virus infection.

Preparing for Vaccination with Novel H1N1 VaccineIn the Northern Hemisphere, novel H1N1 influenza virus is persisting, and is continuing to cause outbreaks and sporadic cases in numerous locales despite the onset of summer. Evidence to date suggests that population immunity to this virus is low, particularly among the young. Thus far, most cases of illness, hospitalization and death associated with novel H1N1 infection have occurred among persons less than 65 years of age.

Groups at increased risk of influenza-related complications include pregnant women, those with asthma, COPD, diabetes, chronic cardiovascular disease, and immuno-compromised persons.

Novel H1N1 Vaccination RecommendationsWith the new H1N1 virus continuing to cause illness, hospitalizations and deaths in the US during the normally flu-free summer months and some uncertainty and about what the upcoming flu season might bring, CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has taken an important step in preparations for a voluntary novel H1N1 vaccination effort to counter a possibly severe upcoming flu season. On July 29, Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices met to consider who should receive novel H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available.
